Entry from: Antigua, Guatemala Entry Title: "Hot Feet" Entry: "In an odd coincidence, the computer I sat down at in an internet cafe here in Antigua has a monitor background photo of a lake from the Enchantment Range in Washington. I stood in the exact spot and took the same photo last summer. Mine was better though. One of the activities one can do shortly outside Antigua is check out some volcanoes. After returning from Copan, first on my list was Pacaya, which sees 100s of tourists every day. I was a bit skeptical of joining the hordes for the walk, but it turned out to be well worth it. Pacaya is currently active. Almost Hawaii-style active. After hiking up an uninspiringly dusty trail through the forest for an hour, the trees disappear and we reach a lava field. Oooh! Up there is the smoking crater! Things are getting more interesting. As we get closer to the crater (a good 1 km away), the first orange streaks from the cone are viewed. That's liquid rock! Its about this time the heat radiating off the rock we are walking on is evident. Its dinstinctly warmer than it was before we stepped onto the rock. Further along, a wee-bit of orange is visible through a crack in the cool surficial rock off to the side of our route.
